I was featured today on PDNs Photo of the Day blog. Please check out the images and blurb from my Santiago Calatrava project.

This was a project I had researched in great deal and then traveled to Valencia, Spain to photograph it. Santiago Calatrava has stated that, “You are only bound in terms of the limits you set.” These buildings are truly unlike anything else. Calatrava’s work is clearly not constrained by the limits common to most architecture.

The first photo is of a loom in a home. They make rugs, decorative cloth, blankets, pillow cases, as well as some of the traditional clothing.

This second photo is a room in a humble home in northern Romania in the Maramures region (near the Ukrainian border). Although the rural agrarian lifestyle can be taxing, and to outsiders may seem bleak, the creativity in this region is unmatched. The eye for design, organization, and vibrant color is evident especially inside the homes. The pillows, beds, and quilts are part of the daughter’s dowry. These rooms exist in the majority of the homes in the region and are largely unused on a daily basis.

Nitza’s mother is a remarkable woman. She is almost 90 years old and continues to farm potatoes and other vegetables on her plot of land, all on her own, on a daily basis. We were able to meet many of her family members and they have a happiness, work ethic, and love for the land that is remarkable. We were privileged to eat with her family multiple times. All of us will always remember their kindness, generosity and authenticity.

After traveling for over a day and arriving at night, then being driven through dark windy roads I was very curious what I would find in the morning. This is what I woke up to (at approximately 5 am when the sun began blaring in on me ha ha. I slept with the windows open and the drapes closed every night after that. There were some beautiful flowers outside my windows. However, with the windows open I usually got 1 huge bee in my room each day, one day there were two.

I will be posting photos from Northern Romania and Budapest for the next couple weeks. All of the photos were taken with the Fuji X100 camera. It was the first trip I took it on. I was quite pleased with the results.

Southern hospitality taken to a new level. We sat down, and before we knew what was going on there was someone behind me rubbing my back. Yes, you read that correctly. Rubbing my back. Jo Carter (picture above) is a "Goodwill Ambassador" at Mary Mac's. She laughed, went around the table rubbing everyone's backs and thought it was ridiculous how Matt and I both had cameras and were constantly taking pictures.

The food was great. I had pot likker and cornbread to start. Then for lunch I had sweet potatoes, fried okra and delicious fried chicken.

I love the irony that the vegetable plate is the "less-healthy" lunch option. When it is all battered and fried it sure does taste good though! When in Atlanta, try Mary Mac's. Say hi to Jo for us.

Downtown Ogunquit (Maine) is wonderfully charming. All of the shops are just as you would expect. We were there during their last week of the normal season. Many places were being boarded up for the winter and one of the most common things we heard among the locals was "see you in the spring."

Lights on the Hudson

4th of July fireworks from 26th street were wonderful. There were hundreds of boats in the Hudson lined up to see the fireworks as well. The East River was nice in the past; however, I vote that the Hudson becomes the new official venue.
